The Misunderstood were an American psychedelic rock band originating from Riverside, California in the mid-1960s. The band moved to Westerham, Kent early in their career, and although they recorded only a handful of songs before being forced to disband, they are considered highly influential in the then-emerging genre.
Creem, in their September 2004 review, wrote, "The saga of the Misunderstood is one of the most unbelievable, heartbreaking, and unlikely stories in the entire history of rock."
Classic Rock's June 2010 issue stated, "The truth is that this band (the Misunderstood) were so far out on their own, so individual and innovative that you can only wonder at the set of circumstances that conspired to prevent them from becoming the iconic name that was surely their destiny."

The Misunderstood est un groupe de rock psychédélique américain, originaire de Californie. Il débute comme un groupe de garage rock classique, avec une combinaison de rhythm and blues et de rock qui évolue vers un son plus psychédélique avec l'arrivée de Glenn Campbell. Le son du groupe se rapproche alors de celui des Yardbirds.
Les Misunderstood quittent la Californie pour l'Angleterre en 1966, en quête d'un public plus réceptif, sous l'impulsion de leur manager, John Peel. Là, ils embauchent le guitariste Tony Hill et sortent deux singles, loués par la critique britannique, mais le groupe se dissout au début de l'année 1967. Il a acquis une renommée posthume importante, notamment grâce à la réédition de leurs titres au début des années 1980.
